Motor Vehicle Division encourages registrations during National Donate Life Month
SANTA FE ─ More than 1 million New Mexicans are registered as organ donors — about 53% of licensed drivers — and the milestone is driven by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division’s practice of offering sign-ups during driver’s license applications and renewals.
April is National Donate Life Month, and MVD encourages New Mexicans become organ donors when applying for or renewing their driver’s license. Over the past year alone, 32,000 people registered with MVD to be organ donors.
“It’s as simple as selecting ‘yes’ to potentially save someone’s life,” said Taxation and Revenue Department Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke. “Becoming an organ donor could be a lifeline for someone else.”
New Mexico also has 1,118 registered Organ Donor license plates, which help raise awareness about the urgent need for organ and tissue donation statewide. That’s 324 more Organ Donor license plates than last year.
Anyone can sign up to be an organ donor when applying for or renewing their license or can register online at donatelifenm.org . The Organ Donor license plate application can be found on MVD’s Online Services website .
