Understanding the Process
In order to be in compliance as a company in New Mexico, you will have to get an Employment Identification Number (EIN) or Federal Employment Identification Number (FEIN) from the IRS website. The next step is to register with the New Mexico Secretary of State at the Business Services section of the website. Finally, you will have to get a Combined Reporting System (CRS) number from New Mexico Tax and Revenue Department. All owners of New Mexico businesses registered as a Partnership, Limited Liability Company or Corporation must obtain a New Mexico CRS Tax ID number.
In order to obtain an EIN or a FEIN, visit the IRS Application for Employer Identification Number.
You may register online at the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department website for your CRS registration.
Before you apply for a State CRS number, make sure you have the following:
- Your Federal Tax ID number (EIN);
- Your business registration number from the Secretary of State; and
- If you are a construction contractor, your contractor number.
